HISTORY
John Taylors was established in 1859, the same year that Big Ben’s clock tower was completed and Charles Darwin published his controversial ‘On the Origin of Species’.
The company has gone from strength to strength and in 2019 we celebrated 160 years as property specialists and auctioneers.
A young farmer from Claythorpe establishes an auctioneering and land agency practice in Louth with an office on Gospelgate.
Founder joined by his son in the practice and renamed John Taylor & Son.
John Taylor purchases a parcel of land on Eastgate in Louth and sets about building a purpose-built dedicated auction room which he named The Mart.
John Taylor senior becomes Mayor of Louth.
John Taylor junior relocates the business to The Cornmarket and was joined by trainee auctioneer George Bland the business eventually being called John Taylor Son & Bland.
September 1915 John Taylor junior’s son, Lieutenant Arthur Montague Taylor killed in action in France.
The firm amalgamates with Stennett, Son & Stevenson to form John Taylor, Stevenson & Sowerby.
Jim Laverack returns to Lincolnshire to join the practice as a junior partner.
John Taylors hold a 4 day auction at The Manor House on Eastgate in Louth following the death of John Kendal Bourne, local press dub it the ‘Sale of the century’.
Ann Laverack (Jim’s wife) organises the first auction at the Woolmart in Louth.
James & Robert Laverack return from University to join their parents in the practice.
As part of the estate of the Late Miss Diana Dixon John Taylors auction a painting by Federico del Campo for £94,000.
The firm celebrate 150 years of business.
Nearly a century and a quarter after moving premises John Taylors purchased The Mart on Eastgate and the directors embarked on a twelve month £200,000 renovation project resulting in a grand opening on 4th February 2024.
